COUGAR FOOTBALL - congrats to the Utes!

48 - 24 Utah

I want to be the first to congratulate the Utah Utes on their win. Seriously, they had a GREAT season and played an AWESOME game. They won the MWC Championship and will probably go to a BCS bowl. They are a VERY talented team. ANY team that can bust into the BCS deserves respect - and they've earned it. I'm sad BYU lost, of course, buy hey, you win some, you lose some and BYU has had a good season too.:)

My dad, my mom, Tali, Malia, Kina and I braved the cold weather to be at the game. I was excited to be there. I was very impressed by the U of U football team. They were fast, exact and their defense and quarterback were amazing. They were able to take advantage of every mistake the Cougars made and capitalize on it. I was not impressed with the U of U fans. They were mean, rude, classless and demeaning. It was horrible. . . while we were walking into the stadium with my two little girls in tow, a guy pulled up beside us and yelled, "GO BACK TO PROVO" from his car. I just looked at him in disbelief - I mean, we are still civilized adults, aren't we? During the game, the fans across the aisle in the stadium taunted us and flipped the bird after every good thing the Utes did. When did just cheering for your team become not enough? After the game, the U of U fans rushed the field and the BYU players walked off in defeat. When they got in front of us a man threw his cup of soda and ice right into Matt Ah-you's face. The other players were heckled by other fans - like, right in their faces! I don't get it. Can't the losing team even leave with a little dignity?

Oh well. I know none of those mean fans read my blog anyway and that there are plenty of mean BYU fans as well, but I needed to express my frustration of my experience at the game. I love a good rivalry, I really do! but is it possible some take it a little too far?

Sounds like the Utes never saw the SHA "goods sportsmanship" skit. Maybe we should arrange to show it to them...I'd make a special trip! Ha ha. I LOVE rivalry too but when it's taken too far it's just not fun.

you are so gracious!! it was a tough game. and seriously, that is the only place on earth i truly HATE going for a game- the fans never change. we've gotten spit on, full beer cans thrown... u fans and wyoming fans, man... the sad thing it makes the whole thing tense and anger-filled instead of like a fun game! now I'm the one venting!! later-

You know, it is so sickening to see people react in such a manner because of a rivalry. You see the ugliest in the "natural man" arise. And really, for what? A game, basically. Yes, I believe that some take it too far, way too far, past the limits of civilization and further past the limits of charity (many red fans are not strangers to this virtue).

I agree...I feel like the Utah fams sometimes take it way too far. The last time we played in Rice Eccles, I went to the bathroom at halftime and there was a man walking around out there screaming "F BYU" in anyone that was wearing blue's face, including mine. He literally got INCHES from my face. It's too bad, people like that make such a fun rivalry so unpleasant.

You're such a good sport, Mary, congratulating the rival! Hahaha... And yes, I've heard some crazy stories about those mean Utah fans. But I guess BYU has its own mean fans, too. I'm just glad I don't personally know any mean Utah or BYU fans!

Mary, first I would llike to say sorry from the bottom of my heart for what you had to go through in SLC. I didnt know how bad it was between the fans til my brother start playing there. Eh and he got hurt. Needs to pray more!!! and clam down. He was killing me. But me being a non-BYU or Utah fan if Utah plays My Men of TROY. I will gladly take the free ticket from my bro but be sporting my USC shirt. LOL. I hope it wasnt my mom or dad flipping the bird. You never know:)

I had an experience almost like yours few years ago up there. They were so mean and nasty. I had never been back since then... seriously, people need to grow up!

Amen to the blog & all the comments, and good for you, Mary- rising above! I have to admit, though, if I was there, and saw Matty getting ice thrown in his face, the samoan in me would've come out :( sad, but true...but I still wouldn't have been totally without class :D
